Job Overview

Research for International Tobacco Control (RITC)’s mission is to create a strong research capacity and knowledge base for effective tobacco control policies and programs that will minimize the threat of tobacco production and consumption to health and human development in developing countries. RITC addresses tobacco as a development issue and not just a smoking issue.  RITC works to accomplish this mission through a combination of research, dissemination, strengthening of capacity and coordination by:  supporting research that will lead to the production, synthesis and dissemination of research data, position papers, and other information on tobacco control issues; enhancing tobacco control research capacity in order to produce credible information for local, national and international policy-making and program development; fostering linkages between Northern and Southern researchers and encouraging partnerships between research organizations, advocates and decision-makers; working to convince the donor community of the utility of supporting tobacco control research for development.

Candidate Profile

Education

  • Masters degree in a relevant social science discipline such as international development, economics, or public administration


  • Experience

  • One to three years of relevant research and project coordination experience
  • Policy research or evaluative techniques experience is an asset
  • Work experience in a developing region is an asset


  • Language

  • Bilingual (English and French) position at an intermediate level

  • Knowledge of Spanish would be an asset


  • Knowledge

  • Knowledge of economic and social policy issues in one or more of regions targeted by the Program
  • Familiarity with database management is an asset


  • Competencies

  • Excellent interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills
  • Strong planning, organizing, coordinating, problem-solving and liaising skills under pressure when deadlines must be met
  • Sound MS-Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and internet skills
  • Ability to perform research-related tasks (e.g. library research, analysis and synthesis of documents, writing and editing)
  • Ability to work with others as an effective and cooperative member of a diverse, multidisciplinary, international team
  • Ability to work under minimum supervision and to be a creative self-starter
  • Awareness of and sensitivity to individual, gender and cultural differences
