Awards for Doctoral Fieldwork
Document(s) 1 of 7 Next

    EEPSEA provides a limited number of awards, to cover the costs of fieldwork required for doctoral degree programs. The awards are open to nationals of EEPSEA member countries who intend to remain in or return to SE Asia following completion of their studies.

The awards cover the costs of fieldwork for up to one year, including one return economy class airfare. Requests for tuition or stipend during the fieldwork year will not be considered. Awardees will be eligible and in fact are encouraged to apply for subsequent EEPSEA research awards, after completing their studies and returning to work in SE Asia.

Applicants should submit the following documents to the EEPSEA Secretariat:

  1. a research proposal of 10-15 pages, following the format described in the EEPSEA Guidelines for Research Proposals;
  2. CV of the applicant;
  3. a letter from the applicant describing:
    1. the applicant's career plans after completion of studies; and
    2. other sources of finance for the applicant's doctoral program (both financing already secured and applications pending);
  4. a confidential letter of recommendation from the applicant's thesis supervisor;
  5. an explanation of the status of the fieldwork proposal at the applicant's university (e.g. has it been approved by the thesis committee?); and
  6. a transcript showing the applicants' courses and grades to date.

These items should be sent by mail to EEPSEA, c/o IDRC, 22 Cross Street, #02-55, South Bridge Court, Singapore 048421. In addition, item 1 - the proposal - should be sent as an email attachment to hfrancisco@idrc.org.sg. The file name for the attachment should include the author's name and the date.

There are no fixed deadlines for submission of requests for thesis awards.

Applications will be reviewed by the EEPSEA Secretariat and Selection Committee. Where feasible, applicants will be invited to one of EEPSEA's biannual research workshops.

The maximum period covered by the awards is one year and the maximum amount is CA $20,000.
